Ash shortage boosts Regen production
A shortage of fly ash from coal-fired power stations led to an upturn in Regen production in 2014. During the summer there was a severe dip in fly ash production due to electricity generation being switched from coal-fired power stations to biomass or gas. As a result, and with construction activity also picking up, demand for Regen increased significantly.
Regen is produced from a by-product from the blast-furnaces which manufacture iron for steel-making. It is ground into a fine powder and used as a cement substitute to produce low CO2, highly durable concrete mixes. It requires no mineral extraction and reduces landfill and is also lighter-coloured, offering aesthetic qualities.
