Tablet system wins top industry award
A ground-breaking system which uses Samsung Galaxy tablets to record and transmit information from near-hits and potential hazards to quality control checks has won a top industry award.
The iPave system, which was developed by Hanson Contracting, allows real-time reporting from construction sites and saves printing more than 22,700 forms and check-lists every year. It won the TUC Trophy for worker involvement at the Mineral Products Association’s annual health and safety awards in London in November.
Contracting site manager Dave Walker said the new system had reduced paper work and at the same time increased safety awareness and near-miss reporting. “It’s a lot easier for the guys to record a fault or take a picture than it is to fill in a form,” said Dave, who said the tablets had been very well received by the workforce.
Safety alerts, toolbox talks and product delivery information is transmitted directly to each surfacing gang using the touch-screen devices that connect to office base stations and the IMS via the internet.
